U.S. Flag Etiquette
While flying your United States Flag,
you should follow the proper rules below:
1) Your flag should be lit at all times (during the day sunlight, during the night some
artifical light)
2) The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform; the only
exception to this is military, fire, police, and patriotic organizations.
3) The American Flag should only be flown with the Stars in the upper left hand
corner, flying a flag upside down means you are in distress.
4) Once the flag is past its service life and it no longer is capable of flying, it should
be destroyed by burning it in an honorable method (contact your local VFW/ Suggested
VFW disposal method)
5) The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be altered
in anyway.
6) When lowering the American Flag, at no time should it come into contact with the
ground or any object.
7) Your flag should be displayed in good weather, unless you have a durable flag to
sustain the outer elements.
8) The flag should be cleaned when needed.
9) When it is displayed from the staff with another flag, the flag of the United States
must always be at the top.
